UHL and Ergéa UK Deliver New SPECT/CT Imaging Technology at Glenfield Hospital

The installation of a new SPECT/CT gamma camera at Glenfield Hospital marks the latest step in University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust’s (UHL) ongoing efforts to enhance its nuclear medicine services.

Delivered through a Managed Equipment Service (MES) in strategic partnership with Ergéa UK and Ireland, the project reflects a shared commitment to improving access to advanced diagnostic imaging and supporting better patient outcomes.

The new GE Aurora SPECT/CT system combines functional nuclear medicine imaging with CT-based anatomical detail, the system enables clinicians to assess both organ function and structure in a single scan. This integrated approach supports more accurate diagnosis, improved clinical decision-making, and more efficient patient pathways.

The investment significantly increases service capacity, enabling UHL’s nuclear medicine service – currently supporting around 5,000 patients annually – to deliver up to 1,000 additional appointments each year. This expanded capacity is expected to improve access, reduce waiting times, and support growing demand for specialist diagnostic imaging services across Leicester and the wider region.

The installation forms part of a wider refurbishment and consolidation of nuclear medicine services at Glenfield Hospital, now the primary hub for UHL’s diagnostic nuclear medicine activity.

Installing this new camera and the refurbishment of our base at Glenfield Hospital are the next steps towards an exciting future for nuclear medicine at UHL. These developments will help our department and the services we offer to patients go from strength to strength.”

Martyn Farmer, Interim Group Head of Nuclear Medicine at University Hospitals Leicester and University Hospitals of Northamptonshire NHS Group

Enabling access to the latest healthcare technologies has always been a key focus of the UHL and Ergéa partnership. Through close collaboration and a shared commitment to innovation, our teams work together to advance care, improve service delivery, and support better outcomes for patients.”

Celebrating the installation

To mark the installation, the Nuclear Medicine Department hosted an official opening ceremony in June, bringing together staff and partners to celebrate the enhanced capabilities and acknowledge the clinical team’s contribution. The event was formally opened by Gang Xu, Deputy Medical Director at University Hospitals Leicester, who performed the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Partnership delivering better patient care

We are thrilled to see this installation completed and would like to extend our thanks to all stakeholders involved for their collaboration and support in delivering this important project.
